Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) is the closest major airport—roughly thirty minutes to downtown in light traffic. Rental cars and app rides both work; there is no passenger rail into the historic center, so budget garage time on arrival.
U.S. Route 50 east from the Capital Beltway is the direct corridor. Friday afternoon and Sunday evening backups at the Bay Bridge approach can add an hour even when Annapolis itself looks clear—check Maryland CHART before leaving.
Interstate 97 south to Route 50 is the usual path. Stadium events, summer shore traffic, and Annapolis legislative weekends can clog the final exits toward City Dock garages.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge delivers Eastern Shore travelers onto Route 50 west toward Annapolis. Summer Saturday queues are notorious; westbound Sunday afternoon is often worse. Have a garage name ready before the historic streets narrow.
The last mile matters
Park in the Hill, Gotts, or Knighton garage—or follow the hotel's instructions—then walk toward Susan Campbell Park and Ego Alley. Circling narrow State Circle blocks with luggage wastes the first hour. Confirm maximum vehicle height if you carry a rooftop box; the Annapolis Current free trolley can shorten the return from Church Circle when it is running on your dates.
Navy football at Taylor Avenue, sailboat shows, regatta weekends, and legislative sessions all change traffic and room demand. On those dates, reserve the garage or hotel parking when you book the room, not on arrival day.
